Jean-Jacques Dessalines was a former enslaved man who became one of the most important military and political leaders of the Haitian Revolution. After the revolution's early leader, Toussaint Louverture, was captured by French forces, Dessalines took command and led the final push for independence.

On January 1, 1804, Dessalines declared Haiti's independence, making it the first nation in the world founded by formerly enslaved people, and the first free Black republic. This came after a hard-fought revolution against French colonial rule — a revolution that remains one of the only successful large-scale slave revolts in world history.

Dessalines became Haiti's first ruler after independence, and his legacy is central to Haitian identity to this day. He's remembered as a symbol of resistance, freedom, and the refusal to accept anything less than full liberation.
